Now without further ado, here are some of the most useful phrases. Review them before your next trip to Japan and you will have no problem travelling, eating, and conversing with the locals anywhere you go!
おはようございます (o-hayo-go-zai-masu) = good morning
こんにちは (kon-nichi-wa) = hello
こんばんは (kon-ban-wa) = good evening
ありがとうございます (ari-ga-to-go-zai-masu) = thank you
お元気(げんき)ですか? (o-gen-ki-desu-ka?) = how are you doing?
はい (hai) = yes
いいえ (ii-eh) = no
すみません (sumi-ma-sen) = excuse me
お願(ねが)いします (on-eh-gai-shi-masu) = please
ごめんなさい (go-men-na-sai) = I am sorry
失礼(しつれい)します (shi-tsu-rei-shi-masu) = pardon me
わかります (wa-ka-ri-masu) = I understand
わかりません (wa-ka-ri-ma-sen) = I don’t understand
大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)です (dai-jyo-bu-desu) = I am fine
OOはどこにありますか? (OO-wa-doh-koh-ni-ari-masu-ka?) = where can I find OO?
これは何(なん)ですか? (ko-re-wa-nan-de-su-ka?) = what is this?
地図(ちず)を書(か)いてもらえますか? (chi-zu-wo-kai-teh-mo-ra-e-masu-ka?) = can you draw me a map?
ここはどこですか? (koko-wa-doko-desu-ka?) = where is this?
おたずねしてもいいですか? (oh-ta-zu-ne-shi-te-mo-ii-desu-ka?) = can I ask you something?
日本語(にほんご)は話(はな)せません (nihon-go-wa-ha-na-se-ma-sen) = I can’t speak Japanese
日本語(にほんご)は少(すこ)し話(はな)せます (ni-hon-go-wa-su-ko-shi-ha-na-se-masu) = I can speak Japanese a little
英語(えいご)は話(はな)せますか? (eh-i-go-wa-ha-na-se-masu-ka?) = can you speak English?
もう一度(いちど)お願(ねが)いします (mou-ichi-doh-oh-neh-gai-shi-ma-su) = please repeat that one more time
チェックイン(チェックアウト)をお願(ねが)いします (check-in/check-out wo-oh-neh-gai-shi-masu) = I want to check in/check out, please
地図(ちず)はありますか? (chi-zu-wa-ari-ma-su-ka?) = is there a map?
近(ちか)くにレストランはありますか? (chi-ka-ku-ni-restaurant-wa-ari-ma-su-ka?) = is there a restaurant nearby?
英語(えいご)のメニューはありますか? (eh-i-go-no-menu-wa-ari-ma-su-ka?) = is there an English menu?
注文(ちゅうもん)をお願(ねが)いします (chu-mon-wo-oh-neh-gai-shi-masu) = I want to order, please
おすすめのメニューはありますか? (oh-su-su-meh-no-menu-wa-ari-ma-su-ka?) = what menu would you recommend?
これお願(ねが)いします (ko-reh-oh-neh-gai-shi-masu) = this one, please
トイレはどこですか? (toilet-wa-doh-koh-desu-ka?) = where is the bathroom?
いただきます (ii-ta-da-ki-masu) = *Japanese specific* — use this phrase before eating (a way to thank the food before eating)
ごちそうさまでした (go-chi-sou-sama-deh-shita) = *Japanese specific* — use this phrase after eating (a way to thank the food & the person who cooked the food after eating)
お会計(かいけい)をお願(ねが)いします (o-kai-kei-wo-o-neh-gai-shi-ma-su) = I want to pay the bill
切符(きっぷ)を買(か)いたいです (kippu-wo-kai-tai-desu) = I want to buy a ticket (for the train)
ここは何駅(なにえき)ですか? (ko-ko-wa-nani-eh-ki-deh-su-ka?) = which station is this?
この電車(でんしゃ)に乗(の)りたいです (ko-no-den-sha-ni-no-ri-tai-desu) = I want to get on this train
写真(しゃしん)を撮(と)ってもらえますか? (sha-shin-wo-totte-mo-ra-eh-ma-su-ka?) = can you take a photo?
タクシー乗(の)り場(ば)はどこですか? (taxi-no-ri-ba-wa-doh-koh-desu-ka?) = where can I grab a taxi?
ここに行(い)きたいです (ko-ko-ni-iki-tai-desu) = I want to go here (take me here)
これをください (ko-reh-wo-ku-da-sai) = please give me this one
いくらですか? (ii-ku-ra-desu-ka?) = how much is this?
助(たす)けてください (ta-su-keh-teh-ku-da-sai) = please help me
